Paul Cluver Riesling Dry Encounter 2012

What a versatile wine! Fresh, crisp, floral tones with a lean elegant mouthfeel and a mineral backbone. Great with spicy foods, seafood, sushi, even beef carpaccio. Drinking beautifully now but will age for at least 5-7 years.

Jancis Robinson : "Those who know me well know my great love of Riesling, the greatest white wine grape in the world even if some wines labelled Riesling are disgusting. I'd like to hand a bouquet here to the South African king of Riesling, Paul Cluver, major pioneer of the cool South African region of Elgin."

De Trafford Straw Wine 375ml 2006
De Trafford Straw Wine 375ml 2006

Delighted to get this batch of maturing liquid gold. Always very small production of this special wine - 265 x 12 x 375mls this year. Grapes are picked at optimal ripeness and spread out on straw mats to dry for 3 weeks before a 22 month fermentation in small oak barrels. Result is mesmerisingly beautiful with a wide range of aromas and flavours, marzipan, honey, dried apricot. While sweet, it is not cloying with enough acidity and tannins (yes!) for freshness. Even Rita Trafford’s artwork on the label is a collectors item!

Paul Cluver Seven Flags Pinot Noir 2008
Paul Cluver Seven Flags Pinot Noir 2008

“Frankly, the Paul Cluver Seven Flags Pinot Noir is a revelation; there is an ethereal quality I’ve not found in any other South African Pinot. Its luminosity, purity of perfumed fruit & silky texture all encourage a feeling of lightness. But do not be deceived, there is no lack of substance as a period of 5-7 years will reveal.” Angela Lloyd has worked on the Platter Guide for 25 yrs.

As in all the Cluver wines, the flavours are really pure and fresh with cool climate lemon and lime elegantly brushed with nuts and cream from the seemless oak integration with a backbone of minerality. Finish goes on and on. Very Burgundian. The 2009 has won the Old Mutual Trophy for best white wine in SA & more recently best wine wine in Southern hemisphere. The name of this vin doux natural from the muscat refers to the year of plantation of the vineyard The 1769, previously produced without a name in very small quantities, was reintroduced in 2007 after Lars Maack tasted an unearthed bottle that was almost 200 years and was still perfect. Mullineux Straw Wine 2011
Mullineux Straw Wine 2011

This delicious straw wine, which has garnered  three 5 stars awards from Platter in its first four vintages, is fast gaining icon status. Jancis Robinson says: "Super rich but glorious. Dried apricots but in lush mode rather than the very tight, crisp mode of Tokaj. So clean! You (almost) taste the sweat that went into this. Long and rich and nervy."  The Chenin Blanc grapes are picked at normal ripeness  and optimal acidity. They are then dried outdoors on racks to concentrate the sugars, acidity and flavours before a long slow natural fermentation in old barrels. The result is indeed quite simply glorious. ABV only 10%. 375ml.

2012 vinatage has just arrived  - yet another 5 star Platter wine from this years Winery of the Year!  Accolades rolling in from all sides.
